In the heart of Jacksonboro, South Carolina, an unincorporated community in Colleton County, is Greater Calvary AME Church. Established in 1886, the church was organized to meet the worship and social needs in the area and has since grown to be one of the area's leading religious centers. The church family partners with its neighboring churches because of the close ties among the residents. Under the leadership of retired pastor, Rev. Leroy Middleton, the church was rebuilt in 1985 in its current location. The late Rev. Mary Magdalene Smith continued the vision with the addition of the fellowship hall in 2006 and it was named in her honor.
Like other congregations, COVID-19 affected the culture and traditional worship of Greater Calvary. However, the church did not close its doors and found innovative ways to worship God. Today, the congregation is regaining strength and continues to spread the love of Jesus Christ through in-person meetings and social media contact. Greater Calvary will continue to follow the mandate of Jesus in Matthew 28:19 because they are a family who loves God and loves God's people.
